A Altair Case Study
Roth McFarlane Hand and Upper Limb Centre in London, Ontario needed to evaluate the biomechanics of bone stresses in complex specimens. Working with Altair and using Altair SimSolid™, Dr. Louis Ferreira’s team imports high‑resolution CT scans (down to ~60 micron) of bones to recreate physical tests for cases such as shoulder glenoid implants and skull/jaw biting experiments.
Altair’s SimSolid was used to run simulated mechanical testing that matches the experimental setups, allowing analysis of intricate trabecular geometry and implant–bone interactions that are impractical with traditional FEA. With Altair SimSolid, the Roth McFarlane HULC team augmented physical measurements—measuring strains in areas unreachable by gauges and comparing implant effects on bone stress—providing insights that would otherwise be prohibitive or impossible and advancing their research.
