Using Altair HyperWorks™ for Biomechanics Simulation in Orthopedics

Philomec, a Canadian start‑up specializing in mechanical and biomechanical FEM simulation, faced the challenge of validating complex musculoskeletal models where materials are inhomogeneous, nonlinear and experimental data are scarce. To support personalized orthopedic implant design and surgery planning, they turned to Altair and its HyperWorks™ explicit multiphysics simulation tools to tackle contact complexity, nonlinear dynamics, and tissue‑specific material calibration.

Using Altair HyperWorks™ (along with Altair’s hands‑on support), Philomec implemented explicit dynamic, multi‑physics simulations and custom material laws to calibrate and validate human osteoarticular models. Altair’s tools and support delivered high confidence in model validity and stability, enabling surgeons to select and adapt implants for individual patients, reducing the number of implants and risk of complications, and allowing designers to optimize implant geometry faster and more economically.
