Topology optimization and new manufacturing methods enable lightweight design in agricultural engineering

Amazone, a maker of agricultural machinery, needed to redesign a complex welded suspension component for its Catros‑2TS disc harrow into a cast part while improving weight and durability. To tackle this challenge Amazone partnered with Altair, leveraging Altair’s topology optimization and simulation tools, including solidThinking Inspire and OptiStruct.

Altair implemented a simulation-driven workflow—topology optimization in solidThinking Inspire followed by FE validation with OptiStruct—and moved the design to a one-piece casting. The result: durability increased by a factor of 2.5, weight was reduced by 8%, manufacturing costs fell by about one‑third, and customers gained higher flexibility for add-on modules.
