Surrogate Models for Antenna Placement on Large Platforms

The Institute of High Performance Computing (IHPC), part of A*STAR, needed a cost‑effective way to evaluate antenna placement on electrically large, multi‑scale aerospace platforms where proprietary antenna geometry was unavailable and full‑wave methods alone were impractical. To address optimal positioning and minimize mutual interference, IHPC worked with Altair using the FEKO electromagnetic simulation suite.

Altair’s FEKO solution enabled IHPC to build surrogate antenna models from limited (phaseless) radiation data and to run true hybridized simulations (MoM/MLFMM around the antenna coupled with PO/LE‑PO/RL‑GO for the platform). Leveraging FEKO’s full‑wave accuracy and optimization tools, the surrogate models closely matched original antenna radiation, were validated on an aerial vehicle and against IHPC’s in‑house code, and provided an accurate, efficient way to evaluate placement options and reduce interference.
