A Altair Case Study
SUNGJIN FO-MA, a South Korean cold-forging specialist for automotive components, faced the challenge of predicting springback in precision forging where tight tolerances are critical—particularly for an intermediate yoke with a stem and two ears. To address this, the company turned to Altair’s AFDEX elasto-plastic module (accessed via the Altair Partner Alliance) to simulate the multi-stage cold forging process and capture elastic recovery effects that influence final part geometry.
Using Altair’s AFDEX, SUNGJIN FO-MA simulated the 6-stage forging and accurately predicted springback, with simulation results closely matching experiments (predicted 0.58 mm vs. experimental 0.50 mm) and measured ear spacing changing from 36.50 mm before unloading to 35.92 mm after. Altair’s solution reduced product development time, improved deformation prediction accuracy, increased component quality through optimized process design, and helped lower costs by enabling faster, more reliable die and process decisions.
