Student Team of Politecnico di Torino Sails Away from Competition

Politecnico di Torino’s student sailing team was tasked with designing and building a regatta‑legal skiff that met strict rules while minimizing weight and maximizing structural stiffness. To tackle this engineering challenge they worked with Altair and used Altair’s HyperWorks modeling and calculation tools.

Using Altair’s HyperWorks for modeling, calculation and optimization, the team reduced the boat’s weight, increased stiffness, and shortened development time—delivering cost savings and a more competitive skiff that performed strongly in competition. Altair’s tools enabled faster, lighter, stiffer design outcomes for the Politecnico di Torino team.
