A Altair Case Study
Spin Applicazioni Magnetiche, founded in 1999 in Piacenza, Italy, is an engineering company that designs, optimizes, prototypes and tests electrical machines for sectors from automotive to aerospace. Facing the challenge of eliminating expensive, hard-to-recycle rare-earth permanent magnets while maintaining efficiency and performance, Spin Applicazioni Magnetiche turned to Altair and its simulation products (including the Altair HyperWorks platform and tools such as FluxMotor and Flux) to evaluate and refine motor designs before building prototypes.
Using a suite of Altair solutions (FluxMotor, Flux, SimSolid, HyperMesh, Inspire, OptiStruct, HyperStudy, SimLab, HyperWorks CFD, ElectroFlo, PSIM, Activate and Compose), the team developed and validated a rare‑earth‑free synchronous reluctance motor. Altair-enabled FEM, structural, vibro‑acoustic and thermal simulations — correlated with bench tests — delivered a high‑efficiency, silent motor that met performance targets (e.g., up to 290 Nm torque and 36 kW base power), eliminated rare earth materials and reduced development time.
