SOGECLAIR Aerospace Employs HyperWorks to Optimize Additively Manufactured Aircraft Components Topology Optimization of a Large Engine Pylon Structure

SOGECLAIR Aerospace needed a new development and manufacturing approach to reduce the weight of a large engine pylon while meeting strict safety, dimensional and systems integration constraints. To tackle this, SOGECLAIR used Altair’s HyperWorks suite—leveraging OptiStruct for topology optimization—and Additive Layer Manufacturing (ALM) to explore manufacturable, highly optimized geometries.

Altair delivered a CAE-driven workflow combining OptiStruct topology optimization in HyperWorks with ALM-aware constraints, CAD refinement and numerical verification; the result was roughly a 20% weight reduction, a 97% reduction in the number of system parts, and structural performance equivalent to the traditional design. Using Altair’s tools (with HyperMesh/HyperView for pre/post-processing) SOGECLAIR achieved greater design freedom, faster development cycles and reduced assembly time and costs.
