A Altair Case Study
Sharda Motor Industries Limited (SMIL), a leading Indian manufacturer of exhaust systems, catalytic converters and related components, faced the challenge of accelerating product development while accurately evaluating durability of exhaust system components under engine vibration and proving-ground road loads. To replace traditional methods and shorten time-to-market, SMIL adopted Altair’s CAE solutions, principally the Altair HyperWorks suite, to perform finite element and fatigue analyses and to clearly explain results for brackets, hangers, muffler-pipe systems and other exhaust parts.
Using Altair HyperWorks (including HyperMesh for FE modeling, OptiStruct for static analysis, Fatigue Process Manager (FPM) for S–N life prediction, and HyperView for post-processing), Altair helped SMIL produce accurate durability assessments with simplified pre/post processing and reduced solve times. The Altair solution cut product development cycle time and boosted productivity; for example, a rear-pipe thickness change from 1.6 mm to 1.2 mm showed Max. Von Mises stress rising from 143.2 MPa to 158.003 MPa in a Static 4G OptiStruct analysis, demonstrating the precise, measurable insights delivered by Altair.
