Reducing Medical Stent Stress by 71%

Medtronic, a global medical device manufacturer, faced slow verification and validation when designing a new expandable stent because traditional CAE and virtual simulation workflows were too time-consuming for microscopic components. To speed development and improve performance, Medtronic engaged Altair (via its Altair ProductDesign division) and used Altair’s optimization software within HyperWorks.

Altair ProductDesign built a baseline stent model, generated five geometric variants and identified 60 design variables which were optimized using Altair’s HyperWorks tools. The new process evaluated 60 design variations overnight instead of over several days, producing a best design with 124% improved stiffness and 71% reduced stress; Altair’s simulation-led approach enabled Medtronic to deliver higher-performing products to market faster.
