QIMR Improves HPC Capabilities and Supports Higher Quality Research with PBS Professional

The Queensland Institute of Medical Research (QIMR), one of Australia’s largest medical research institutes, needed shared high-performance computing to support dozens of labs and hundreds of researchers processing large bioinformatics and statistical datasets. To provide a reliable, supported workload manager for a Dell-based cluster, QIMR selected Altair and its PBS Works suite—specifically PBS Professional—to deliver a scalable, enterprise-grade job scheduling solution.

Altair implemented PBS Professional to centrally manage QIMR’s Dell PowerEdge cluster beginning in 2011, bringing more than 50 scientists across six departments onto a single, easy-to-use system. The result was measurable: workloads that once took weeks on individual workstations now complete in hours or minutes, a thousand‑genome computation became feasible, statisticians were productive within a week, and administrative overhead was reduced—delivering clear improvements in research throughput and quality driven by Altair’s solution.
