PBS Professional at Chrysler Managing 250,000 Simulations a Year

Chrysler, a long-standing heavy user of computer-aided engineering, was running about 250,000 simulation jobs a year and had grown its HPC footprint to 1,544 cores. Their challenge was to reliably schedule and better utilize a diverse CAE server farm while reducing licensing and management complexity; they engaged Altair, using PBS Professional (part of the PBS Works suite) alongside Altair HyperWorks CAE tools.

Altair consolidated scheduling by deploying PBS Professional across the entire cluster (expanding from an initial 384-core, CFD-only deployment to a unified 1,544-core environment), completing the rollout in roughly 12 weeks. The Altair solution enabled sharing of resources between CFD and other simulations, improved overall server utilization, reduced license costs through HyperWorks licensing, maintained service levels, and supported Chrysler’s 250,000 annual simulations with measurable gains in utilization and cost efficiency.
