OptiStruct® Makes Life-form Inspired Table a Reality for IL Hoon Roh

IL Hoon Roh, an artist and architect known for his Radiolaria-inspired Fabric Table series, faced the challenge of turning a delicate, organic virtual form into a structurally sound, manufacturable table. After the Table R Ex07 achieved the desired shape but fell short on structural refinement, he engaged Altair and its OptiStruct®/HyperMesh® tools to retain the design intent while solving strength, thickness distribution and manufacturability issues.

Altair’s Korean optimization team used HyperMesh for advanced meshing and OptiStruct for automatic structural analysis and topology optimization, guiding thickness, load paths and even suggesting a tapered leg section. Working interactively with Altair, IL Hoon Roh produced Table R Ex08 with improved structural performance, a lighter, optimized design and fewer physical prototypes—demonstrating feasibility, optimized structural analysis and reduced prototyping thanks to Altair.
