Case Study: Unilever reduces prototype costs and optimizes packaging designs with Altair ProductDesign

Optimizing Packaging Designs & Reducing Prototype Costs

Unilever sought to differentiate its Lynx (Axe) deodorant packaging but lacked in-house analysis capability to validate new concepts. To adopt a simulation‑led design approach for a new can and reduce prototype costs, Unilever engaged Altair (via its Altair ProductDesign division) to support optimization and testing of the packaging concept.

Altair ProductDesign optimized material layouts to stiffen the cap button, improved load paths through the can walls, ran detailed “what‑if” scenarios on loads, geometry and materials, and ranked options against manufacturing cost. Altair also delivered the Atlas system so Unilever’s CAD and concept teams can run early analysis themselves—enabling far more design options, reducing the need for expensive prototypes, and embedding material, performance and cost trade‑offs into future packaging development.
