Optimizing Packaging Designs & Reducing Prototype Costs

Unilever, seeking to differentiate its Lynx (Axe) deodorant packaging and reduce prototype costs, needed a simulation-led approach to design a new can but lacked in-house analysis engineers. They engaged Altair (via Altair ProductDesign) to support concept development, optimization and testing of the new deodorant can and cap.

Altair ProductDesign optimized material layouts to stiffen the cap button and improve load paths, ran detailed “what‑if” scenarios to compare geometry, loading and material options, and delivered the Atlas system so Unilever’s CAD and concept designers could run early analysis themselves. Altair’s work reduced the need for expensive prototypes, enabled exploration of many new design options, and empowered Unilever to conduct future studies that balance material use, performance and manufacturing cost.
