The National Institute of Technical Teachers Training & Research (NITTTR) Chandigarh needed a realistic, complex practical model to teach digital twin, embedded AI and VR concepts as part of its curriculum. NITTTR chose Altair to develop a vertical-axis wind turbine digital twin that could address both physics- and data-driven aspects using Altair’s digital twin and CAE/ML toolset (Altair Embed, Altair RapidMiner, Altair HyperGraph and Altair OptiStruct).

Altair implemented a sensor-equipped physical turbine linked via IoT to its digital twin platform, combining data acquisition, FE modeling and machine learning. Using 18,000 accelerometer and strain-gauge tests, the Altair solution predicted “good” turbine conditions with 97% accuracy and “faulty” conditions with 95% accuracy, reduced maximum margin of error to about 4.5%, enabled real-time remote monitoring, and met NITTTR’s teaching and research objectives.
