Managing 30 Teraflops of Compute Power PBS Professional at Italy’s CILEA Consortium

CILEA is an Italian university consortium that provides HPC services to researchers from government, industry and academia, operating a 208‑blade HP Lagrange cluster and roughly 2,500 CPUs with a peak of 30 teraflops to support about 400 registered users. Faced with rapid growth, a highly heterogeneous user community and the need for a workload manager with robustness, flexibility and good price/performance, CILEA selected PBS Professional from Altair to schedule and manage its compute resources.

Altair’s PBS Professional was deployed across all ~2,500 processors to manage the Lagrange cluster plus additional Opteron and SMP systems, delivering flexible scheduling policies, high utilization and a short learning curve for novice users. As a result, PBS Professional keeps CILEA’s processors busy, supports its Top 500–class 30 teraflop environment (Lagrange alone provides 22 teraflops), and provides measurable operational scale—PBS Professional licenses cover all 2,500 processors—while improving user satisfaction and resource-sharing across the consortium.
