LG Electronics Performs Smartphone Drop-Test Simulation in Less than 24 Hours with New Automated Approach

LG Electronics, a global leader in consumer electronics and mobile devices, needed to sharply reduce the time required for smartphone drop-test simulation to meet aggressive design cycles. Working with Altair and its HyperWorks suite (including HyperMesh, RADIOSS, HyperView and the HyperWorks automation framework), LG sought to automate the labor-intensive geometry cleanup, meshing, contact definition and post-processing steps that traditionally took one to two weeks.

Altair and LG implemented an end-to-end automated system (QIS24) that standardizes preprocessing, batch meshing, solver runs and post-processing. The result: CAD-to-report in less than 24 hours (complete modeling <5 hours, PCB/chip meshing and solder-joint creation <5 minutes vs. a full day previously, boundary setup ~30 minutes, reporting <2 minutes), dramatically increasing repeatability and freeing engineers for more design iterations. Altair’s solution also reduces human error and is expected to lower warranty costs while speeding time to market.
