Less Weight, More Freight Altair Software Helps Develop Light, Innovative Cargo Rail Wagon Platform

Rail Cargo Group needed a lighter, modular freight-wagon platform to meet complex and changing logistics requirements while keeping manufacturing and maintenance simple. To develop the TransANT wagon series, engineering partner PJM used Altair’s HyperWorks suite (including Altair HyperMesh, HyperView and OptiStruct) to support topology optimization, FE analysis and the documentation needed for approvals and certification.

Using Altair tools, PJM delivered a welded, modular I‑beam design that reduced wagon base-frame weight by 20%, delivered up to a 4‑ton payload advantage, and cut parts and assembly complexity by roughly 40% (with superstructures up to 75.5 t). The Altair-enabled optimization also translated into operational gains—about 100 fewer block trains per year on a key route—delivering cost savings, greater flexibility for customers and improved sustainability.
