Kyoto University's HPC Resources Power Japan's Research Community

Kyoto University, one of Japan’s largest and highest-ranked universities, needed to evolve its Academic Center for Computing and Media Studies (ACCMS) to meet massive data growth and diverse researcher needs across more than 200 teams and 1,600 users (about 60% external). The university commissioned Cray supercomputers but relied on Altair for workload and resource management, deploying Altair PBS Professional as part of the Altair PBS Works suite to enforce policies and manage complex HPC workloads.

Altair implemented PBS Professional on three Cray systems (including the Camphor 2 Cray XC with over five petaflops peak performance), integrated with Cray DataWarp in transparent cache mode, and delivered custom code and a node allocator to meet SLAs and optimize scheduling. The Altair solution enabled industry-leading workload management, helped keep energy costs down, and positioned Kyoto University with top-100 supercomputing power and broad availability for researchers nationwide.
