Hyundai Mobis Automotive Group Improves the EMC Analysis Process from 2D to 3D Using Feko for Shielding Effectiveness Simulation

Hyundai MOBIS, an automotive components supplier affiliated with Hyundai Motor Group, faced the challenge of improving electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) analysis for its Around View Monitor (AVM) housing—moving from 2D PCB-level checks to comprehensive 3D system-level shielding assessments while reducing simulation time and addressing apertures and slots that let EMI into the enclosure. Hyundai MOBIS worked with Altair using FEKO (part of Altair/HyperWorks tools) to tackle these issues.

Altair implemented a model-decomposition workflow: near fields from Cadence Sigrity (.nfd) were imported into FEKO to create an equivalent PCB source, the AVM housing CAD was modeled in 3D, and simulations across 0.4–4 GHz identified hotspots, guided slot-width and connector adjustments, and compared candidate housing materials. Using Altair’s FEKO, Hyundai MOBIS cut simulation time by 33% while maintaining accuracy, reduced or eliminated current-density hotspots through design changes, and selected the composite material that met the required shielding effectiveness.
