A Altair Case Study
RDSO (Research Designs and Standards Organisation) needed to develop a diesel export locomotive that met strict targets for performance, reliability, fuel economy, crashworthiness and long-term durability while shortening the expensive, time‑consuming physical test cycle. To address limited physical testing capacity and high pre‑processing times, RDSO turned to Altair and its Altair HyperWorks suite (notably HyperMesh and HyperView) to introduce simulation-driven design and verification early in development.
Altair implemented HyperWorks/HyperMesh workflows for structural, modal and stress analysis, suspension dynamics, vibration isolation and topology optimization, using simulation to validate engine and underframe designs. As a result, Altair helped RDSO substantially reduce simulation development time, minimize physical testing, optimize the underframe (reducing weight after accommodating an RE cab), and embed HyperMesh into the standard design process—improving fuel efficiency, durability and operator comfort while shortening overall development time.
