Case Study: Janssen (Johnson & Johnson) achieves 3X scalable cloud HPC and accelerated drug discovery with Altair Grid Engine & NavOps

A Altair Case Study

Preview of the Janssen Case Study

HPC at Johnson & Johnson Supports Critical Pharmaceutical Development

Janssen, part of Johnson & Johnson, needed on-demand, scalable HPC capacity in the cloud to support global drug discovery and vaccine work, including COVID-19 research. The team ran over 10 production HPC clusters on AWS but faced limits from an aging open-source Grid Engine and disparate, decade-evolved cluster configurations, so they turned to Altair and its commercial offerings to meet these challenges.

Altair upgraded Janssen to Altair Grid Engine and deployed Altair NavOps to orchestrate multi-cluster, cloud-based HPC, integrating with AWS, Docker, cgroups, and existing security and change-management systems. The Altair solution removed previous scalability limits, enabled automated cluster creation and scaling, and increased cluster size to 3X the prior implementation, giving Janssen faster, more agile compute to support enterprise-level science.
