A Altair Case Study
Scripps Research, one of the world’s largest private non-profit biomedical research institutes, faced the challenge of delivering large volumes of compute cycles to hundreds of life‑science researchers running compute‑intensive workloads across multiple HPC platforms. To meet this need, Scripps Research adopted Altair’s PBS Professional workload management software to provide a consistent, easy-to-use interface for its scientific users.
Altair implemented PBS Professional to manage a heterogeneous environment of clusters and shared systems—about 1,300 processors across three platforms—serving up to 500 account holders (75–100 active users). The solution delivered a seamless, coherent interface across platforms, required minimal maintenance (“install and just runs”), and let researchers focus on science rather than system administration, while reliably provisioning the compute cycles needed for modelling, docking, proteomics and other research.
