A Altair Case Study
Gator Motorsports, the University of Florida Formula SAE team, needed to decrease weight and increase strength of critical components (including the pedal box and suspension bell cranks) to improve on-track performance and accelerate design cycles. To meet this challenge they used Altair’s solidThinking Inspire for concept generation and optimization.
Using Altair’s solidThinking Inspire to apply measured loads and kinematics, the team generated optimized designs, refined them for production in 6061‑T6, and cut design time dramatically (the brake pedal redesign took under two weeks). The optimized bell crank was 6.6% lighter, experienced 1,000 psi less maximum stress, and delivered increased stiffness, while the brake pedal achieved higher factors of safety — results that improved performance and readiness for competition.
