E-motor Design using Multiphysics Optimization

Porsche AG enlisted Altair to tackle the challenge of improving the total balance in e‑motor development for its high‑performance electric powertrains. The program needed to meet stringent performance, efficiency, driving‑dynamics and regulatory requirements while accounting for thermal, structural, vibration and control interactions, so Altair provided an integrated simulation and optimization toolchain including Altair Flux, FluxMotor, OptiStruct and Activate.

Altair implemented a coupled multiphysics optimization process that links electromagnetic, thermal, structural and control models—using full‑order models and reduced‑order surrogates—to maximize torque and power across driving cycles while keeping rotor stress, vibration and temperature within limits. Using Altair’s suite, Porsche achieved a significantly improved initial design and a better overall design balance compared with classical methods, with the project showing measurable gains once designs were run through the optimization process.
