Ductile Fracture Modeling of High-Strength Galvanized Steels at Borçelik with Altair

Borçelik, Turkey’s largest galvanized steel producer, faced the challenge of accurately modeling ductile fracture behavior in high‑strength galvanized steels to support lighter, safer vehicle body structures and other forming and impact applications. To address this, Borçelik partnered with Altair and used Altair® Radioss™ for finite element analysis of fracture and material formability.

Altair implemented Radioss simulations using built‑in ductile failure models (e.g., /FAIL/BIQUAD, Hosford‑Coulomb /FAIL/EMC and HC_DSSE, /FAIL/JOHNSON, and /FAIL/FLD) to generate fracture loci from tensile data and support DOE and optimization workflows; mass scaling via /DT/NODA/CST reduced run times by nearly 50%. Using Altair’s solution, Borçelik achieved more reliable fracture predictions, cut scrap by about 10% and lowered costs by roughly 5%.
