Developing Efficient Design Procedures for Wideband, Low-profile Antennas Using Altair FEKO Electromagnetic Simulation Technology

The University of Colorado Antenna Research Group (ARG) sought to develop efficient design procedures for wideband, low-profile, concealed antennas by evaluating the underside of vehicles as an alternative mounting location for high-frequency VHF systems. To assess performance and avoid extreme miniaturization, ARG used Altair FEKO electromagnetic simulation technology.

Altair supplied FEKO EM field simulation methods to model, analyze and optimize underside-mounted antenna designs; these simulations let the University of Colorado validate performance, refine designs, and demonstrate the viability of concealed, low-profile VHF antennas without excessive miniaturization. By using Altair’s tools, ARG streamlined its design workflow, reduced physical prototyping and iterations, and established repeatable procedures for antenna placement and optimization.
