Clemson University Chooses PBS Professional for HPC Workload Management

Clemson University, a top-25 public research university, relied on its Palmetto HPC cluster to support faculty, students and external researchers but faced scalability and reliability limits with the open-source Maui scheduler. Needing a commercial workload manager with strong technical support, Clemson evaluated vendors and chose Altair’s PBS Professional to meet its growing workload-management requirements.

Altair implemented PBS Professional (with PBS Works technical support and training), enabling Clemson to scale from 1,623 to 1,804 nodes, reliably queue thousands of jobs, reduce HPC administration overhead and decrease end-user support calls. The Altair solution also improved productivity through plug‑in automation and integration with Clemson’s Hadoop-on-demand/OrangeFS framework, eliminating data-staging and improving overall job efficiency.
