A Altair Case Study
Bremar Automotion, an Australian engineering firm specializing in CAE for motorsport and other industries, needed to validate its computer models against destructive full-size roll cage tests to obtain CAMS and FIA accreditation for certifying motorsport roll cages. To meet the FIA’s stringent safety requirements, Bremar had to demonstrate that its simulations accurately predicted real-world behavior of rollover protection systems (ROPS) and welded tube joints.
Altair supplied nonlinear finite element analysis with RADIOSS to simulate high-displacement, plastic-deformation scenarios (including main hoop loads ~10–20+ tonnes with 50 mm displacement, roof tests to ~120 mm, and detailed welded T‑piece trials). The RADIOSS results closely matched physical load‑displacement and strain measurements across tests, allowing Bremar Automotion to secure FIA/CAMS approval to homologate roll cages, improve safety while reducing weight, and achieve high confidence in its approval process.
