Assa Ashuach uses solidThinking Inspire to Optimise 3D Printed Stool Design

Assa Ashuach Studio, a London-based design studio that creates lifestyle and limited-edition pieces, wanted to produce a light, economical 3D‑printed stool customized to support a 120 kg load while minimizing material, cost and waste. In collaboration with Altair, the studio used Altair’s solidThinking Inspire (leveraging OptiStruct technology) to explore topology‑optimised, bone‑inspired forms that meet both aesthetic and performance goals.

Altair implemented solidThinking Inspire’s topology optimisation and OptiStruct analysis to remove redundant material according to stress zones and generate the “Femur” stool geometry, which was produced by laser sintering in Nylon 12. The solution confirmed structural integrity under a 120 kg distributed load, reduced material usage and part weight, lowered laser millage and energy consumption, and enabled faster, more economical production.
