American Magic Team Taps Altair’s Data Analytics Tools in Quest for America’s Cup Glory

America’s Cup competitors — most notably the NYYC’s American Magic campaign — face tight design rules (one AC75, limited component development and restricted full-scale testing) while trying to squeeze maximum on-water performance from huge amounts of sensor and simulation data. To turn that data into actionable insight, the America’s Cup team partnered with Altair, leveraging Altair RapidMiner and Altair Knowledge Studio for data analytics and AI-driven model building.

Altair used Knowledge Studio to clean and prepare data, apply EDA and AutoML/explainable AI, and then fed refined inputs into Altair HyperStudy to optimize yacht setups. The work — done in close collaboration with Altair’s analytics experts — cut potential input variables from over 3,000 to just 32, identified the primary contributors to boat speed across sailing segments, and produced optimized configurations and benchmarks for simulators and sailors, enabling more prescriptive design and performance decisions.
