A Altair Case Study
Amazone, a global leader in agricultural machinery headquartered in Osnabrück, Germany, needed to improve seed placement in its pneumatic seeding machines to maximize yields while reducing seed and fertilizer use. Confronted with complex particle–fluid dynamics, limited insight from conventional testing, and long prototype cycles, Amazone partnered with Altair and its simulation products (EDEM and AcuSolve) to develop a predictive DEM–CFD model of the seeding process.
Altair implemented a bidirectionally coupled DEM–CFD solution—using EDEM to model non‑spherical seed particles and AcuSolve for the airflow—calibrated by physical tests to capture particle–fluid interactions. The simulations enabled design optimization, produced seed distribution results that correlated with experimental Coefficient of Variance measurements, reduced development time by up to 40%, cut seed waste, and delivered more sustainable and profitable outcomes for farmers.
