A Altair Case Study
[AB]structures, an Italian structural design and engineering firm, was tasked with developing three structurally optimized but unique VO70 Round the World Racing Yachts within a tight schedule while complying with the Volvo Open 70 Box Rule constraints. To meet this challenge they relied on Altair’s HyperWorks CAE suite (using HyperMesh, OptiStruct, RADIOSS and HyperView) to integrate and partially automate their structural design and analysis workflows.
Using Altair’s HyperWorks tools, [AB]structures built finite‑element models, simulated complex carbon‑composite laminates, and ran optimization and non‑linear analyses to lower the yachts’ vertical center of gravity, increase righting moment, and produce on‑site repair‑ready panel designs. The outcomes were measurable: Groupama 4 won the 2011–12 Volvo Ocean Race overall, Puma Ocean Racing finished third and won the inshore championship, and Telefonica placed fourth—while development was streamlined within a single Altair software environment.
