A Sustainable Robot Retrofit Reducing Power Consumption and Saving Resources Via Hardware Updates

Amprove, a Stuttgart-based engineering services company founded in 2019, set out to design a more energy-efficient pick-and-place robot by reducing moving mass, shortening cycle times, and lowering energy consumption. To perform topology and structural optimization and ensure manufacturability for retrofit-ready parts, Amprove used Altair’s simulation suite—principally Altair OptiStruct—for detailed analyses and optimization.

Using Altair’s tools, Amprove consolidated 11 components into 4 (eliminating 25 bolts), discovered and removed two unnecessary linear guides, and selected optimized manufacturing methods (metal and plastic 3D printing, waterjet cutting) that kept parts plug-and-play. The Altair-enabled redesign cut moving mass by about 29.8 kg (≈30 kg), boosted production speed by 34%, reduced energy costs by 52%, and is expected to deliver customer ROI within two years.
