Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution - Customer Case Study

Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), a leading nonprofit oceanographic research center, needed a flexible, user-friendly web tool to visualize large model outputs forecasting the impacts of climate change and ocean acidification on the US Atlantic sea scallop fishery. Researchers required a no-login, cross-browser dashboard that could be built and deployed independently to communicate future scenarios to fisheries managers, industry representatives, and the public.

Using Panopticon, WHOI researchers created interactive visualizations of key biological and economic indicators—scallop biomass, landings, and industry revenues—under different IPCC climate scenarios. The dashboards and PDF outputs now support outreach and further research, and provide actionable insights for the $500M New England scallop industry to inform long-term economic planning.
