A Altair Knowledge Works Case Study
NITTTR Chandigarh, an autonomous institute under India’s Ministry of Education, needed a practical, real-world model to teach digital twin technology as part of its curriculum. They chose a vertical-axis wind turbine—a complex, high-cost, weather-exposed system—as the test case and engaged Altair to deliver a platform that combined physics- and data-driven modeling to capture both operational behavior and design-relevant insights.
Altair connected a physical turbine with sensors (accelerometers, strain gauges, anemometers) and used its toolchain (Embed, RapidMiner, HyperGraph, OptiStruct) to build a digital twin, enable remote IoT monitoring, and run FE simulations and ML analysis on 18,000 test cases. The resulting model matched experimental strain responses and achieved 97% accuracy for healthy-state detection and 95% for faulty-state detection, improving predictive maintenance capabilities and effectively demonstrating digital twin concepts for teaching and research.
