HyperWorks CAE Process Automation Accelerates Product Development at Scania

Scania, a leading global manufacturer of heavy trucks and buses, faced the challenge of rapidly verifying many highly customized vehicle variants with finite-element (FE) simulations. Assembling virtual truck models—positioning hundreds of components, defining contacts, and adding pre‑strained bolts—was time-consuming and error-prone, and existing automated workflows lacked the interactivity needed for analysts to make timely corrections.

Scania implemented Altair’s HyperWorks framework and a semi‑automatic pre‑processing manager to automate and streamline model assembly while preserving user interaction. The solution leverages native CAD support, advanced meshing, a solver‑neutral data model, and process automation to read CAD libraries, position components, cut holes for connections, and generate pre‑tensioned “spider” bolts. The result was higher‑quality FE models, shorter development cycles, a more consistent CAE process, and greater flexibility in product development.
