Health NZ - Te Whatu Ora, New Zealand's national health authority, faced the challenge of providing accessible healthcare to patients with chronic conditions living in remote rural communities. To address this, they partnered with vendor Alphero to co-design and build a remote patient monitoring solution, the Piki Te Ora Android app and integrated digital service.

Alphero implemented a system where patients use a pre-loaded smartphone and smartwatch to track health metrics and complete daily surveys, with all data securely integrated into clinical systems. The solution has made a noticeable difference since its July 2023 launch, resulting in patients feeling more informed and connected, clear improvements in health indicators, and strong peer support that reduces isolation. The success of the pilot has generated growing interest from other health groups seeking to offer the service.
