Case Study: Aurecon achieves reliable refinery pond design and leak detection with AllyCAD

Aurecon, South Africa’s largest consulting engineering company, was awarded a R15 million contract to review the conceptual and detailed design, and supervise construction of a new 20,000 m² Base Metal Refinery Pond for Impala Platinum. The project addressed the need for greater water storage capacity, improved effluent handling, and a replacement for the existing single-liner pond at the refinery site.

Using AllyCAD and Civil Designer, Aurecon developed the earthworks and civil design for the new pond, including lining, flow control, and geotechnical solutions for dolomitic ground conditions. The result was a trapezoidal, leak-detection pond design with over-excavation and compacted layers to protect liner integrity and prevent water ingress, supporting the refinery’s expansion plans with a measurable R15 million project value.
