China Unicom, China’s third largest mobile carrier, wanted to turn IoT into a new business opportunity while reducing the high cost of collecting electricity usage data for the Southern Power Grid Company in Guangdong Province. However, its low-cost IoT SIMs in smart meters were being removed and reused in consumer devices, creating a challenge for securing usage and preventing revenue loss. With Allot’s IoTSecure, China Unicom applied behavior control policies to IoT SIMs so they could only communicate with approved websites and applications, and it also built a portal for monitoring SIM behavior, usage analytics, and anomaly alerts. The result was better security and control for large-scale IoT deployments, helping the Southern Power Grid Company reduce OPEX and enabling China Unicom to create new revenue streams from electricity meters and later extend the approach to gas meters and PoS devices across Guangdong Province.
