A private investment fund worked with AlixPartners after acquiring a European bank that had just emerged from a long period of distress. The new owners wanted to reshape the bank’s finances and build a new strategy focused on becoming a leader in the nonperforming loan (NPL) workout market, but they needed help designing and implementing that transformation.

AlixPartners developed and rolled out a three-part transformation strategy covering NPL portfolio management, organizational design, and data and analytics. The firm helped automate processes, create a leaner operating model, and build a custom database that combined internal and external data to improve credit evaluation and recovery forecasting. As a result, initial NPL portfolio assessments dropped from one to two weeks to a couple of hours, recoveries accelerated, and the bank became a regional leader in the NPL workout market.
