Agrokor Group, a major food and retail conglomerate and one of the largest employers in the Balkans, faced a near-collapse in 2017 with more than €6 billion in debt, frozen bank accounts, and the risk of widespread economic fallout in Croatia. AlixPartners was brought in as restructuring advisor to help manage the crisis and guide the company through an extraordinary administration process under Croatia’s new “Lex Agrokor” law.

AlixPartners implemented a rapid restructuring program that stabilized cash management, developed business plans for operating units, secured a €1.06 billion super senior debt facility, and helped execute a debt-for-equity swap and global settlement with creditors. The plan was approved by 80.2% of creditors, protected over 50,000 jobs, preserved hundreds of suppliers, and ultimately transitioned Agrokor’s businesses into Fortenova Group on a more sustainable footing.
