$3M Savings from Data Center Consolidation Program Post-Acquisition

Cigna, a multinational managed healthcare and insurance company, needed to consolidate data centers after acquiring HealthSpring to reduce corporate real estate footprint and ongoing OpEx by closing two newly acquired data centers and avoiding colocation costs. Cigna engaged Align to develop and manage a full data center consolidation program, including strategy development and project management, workload migration, data center exits/closures, and legacy IT decommissioning.

Align executed a discovery, planning, execution and decommission plan—profiling 250 applications and inventorying 1,242 devices—running 25 migration events over five months. Align migrated 1,003 VMs and 246 application services, decommissioned 828 VMs and 1,263 physical servers, and moved/repurposed 558 devices; the project was delivered on time and under budget and saved Cigna more than $3 million per year while reducing footprint, lowering operating costs, and improving capacity and performance.
