The University of Arkansas System, which employs more than 20,000 people and covers over 36,000 members in its self-funded health plan, faced rising health-care costs and suspected spending on ineligible dependents. To protect benefits while cutting costs, the University of Arkansas System partnered with Alight Solutions and engaged Alight’s Plan-Smart dependent eligibility verification service to run a comprehensive audit.

Alight Solutions executed a customized, employee-focused campaign—reviewing nearly 40,000 documents and fielding over 5,500 calls—to audit 19,000 dependents, identifying 750 ineligible dependents (3% of the dependent population). The audit produced just over $1.5 million in annual premium savings (a little over 1% of total premiums), reduced HR burden through Alight’s customer care center and secure portal, and delivered ongoing cost containment for the university.
