Idealist.org is a nonprofit platform that connects people with jobs, volunteer roles, and collaboration opportunities in the social-good sector — serving 1.4 million monthly visitors and 120,000 organizations with a 30-person team. Because search is the site’s core function and its primary metric is user conversions (clicks into listings), Idealist needed faster, more relevant search than its previous SQL-based approach could provide.
In 2017 Idealist moved to Algolia (using Site Search, Geo Search and Click Analytics), which let the team tune relevance, use signals like click analytics, and add features such as auto-radius for location filtering. The faster, more relevant results increased click conversions by 15%, helping more users find and engage with opportunities.
