Abacus is a mobile and desktop app that helps small businesses track and verify expenses, but managing and searching the rich set of expense data (amounts, merchants, times, tags, receipts and other metadata) made verification slow and cumbersome for finance teams. The company needed fast, faceted search across many attributes so managers could quickly find expenses by person, amount, category, missing receipts, and more.
Abacus integrated Algolia’s API to provide advanced, faceted search and autocomplete across multiple fields, enabling pivots on up to eight attributes and instant query results. The result was real‑time expense reporting and much faster verification and approvals, plus a rapid, low‑effort implementation that let the startup go to market quickly while delivering a noticeably faster user experience.
