Building a Video Discovery Platform with Algolia

Unreel.co is a video discovery startup that automatically crawls the web to identify and tag the “moments that matter” inside videos, building a searchable library of over 3.5 million moments across 90,000 videos. Their challenge was enabling fast, customizable search to let users discover scenes in context without spending scarce resources on building and maintaining an in-house search infrastructure.

Unreel integrated Algolia—indexing moment tag, title, description and channel and ranking by moment/video score—using a mongo-algolia adapter and a custom UI, going live in about three weeks. The result was a rapid, low-cost implementation that saved development time, delivered fast, accurate scene search that impressed partners, and helped propel product growth (including an upcoming iOS app, JustLOL).
