A Alfresco Case Study
NASA's Langley Research Center, NASA’s oldest field center for aeronautical and structural testing, needed to replace a decade-old homegrown collaboration portal (aeroCOMPASS) that supported more than 800 team sites but no longer met strict security and modern architecture requirements. The center required a secure, familiar-looking platform that would support hundreds of collaborative tests performed by engineers, researchers, technicians and external partners.
Alfresco provided customizable team sites, personal dashboards and list-sharing features while integrating with NASA’s OpenSSO/OpenAM single sign-on and account management, including site-level SBU labeling for sensitive-but-unclassified data. The migration delivered fast user adoption, now supporting 2.5 TB of content and over 400 users (a 20% growth in two years), reduced administrative overhead through open-source flexibility and licensing, and set the stage for future mobile integration.
