Macquarie University Goes Paperless with Alfresco

Macquarie University, a leading Sydney institution with nearly 50,000 students and 2,800 staff, faced growing operational strain from high volumes of paper records—student files, HR and property records—managed manually and stored in archives that once flooded and suffered mold damage. The university needed a reliable way to digitize records, improve statutory reporting and compliance, and implement electronic workflows to streamline processes across autonomous business units.

After evaluating options, Macquarie deployed Alfresco for its open architecture and customizability, integrating it with other systems and consolidating documents into a central content repository. The university digitized records and automated routing and approval workflows; today Alfresco holds over 1.6 million assets, serves 2,500+ users, adds 10–15K assets weekly, has eliminated routine paper records, and is extending mobile access and cloud deployment to broaden usage and insights.
